Gov. Martin Elechi of Ebonyi on Tuesday while speaking with newsmen urged the National Assembly to immediately proscribe the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for "sabotaging the nation’s education sector’’.
“I blame the National Assembly for not proscribing ASUU; that union is due for proscription.
“The way they are going about the strike is sabotage,’’ he said.
Elechi said that the union was deliberately sabotaging the government and country with incessant strikes.
Describing the current situation in the university sector as unfortunate, the governor stressed that the strike could also have dire consequences on the security of the country.
“The ASUU strike is unfortunate; I hope that common sense will prevail.
“If you say a lot is lacking in the university sector, you are correct; but it is like that in almost all other sectors of the country.
“The major victims of the strike are not government but the students. When you go on strike, you have to be reasonable so that you do not destroy everything,’’ he said.
Elechi reiterated that the way ASUU had been going about the strike amounted to sabotage.
